Chapter Eight

While looking over the notes from our last staff meeting, a smile spread across my face. My mother was looking for new recipes to add to our menu. When I was a child, I would help my grandmother and mother make sweet potato pies. Something about the smell of cinnamon and nutmeg made me feel warm and fuzzy.

Once my grandmother taught me her recipe, it was a wrap. For two months straight, I made pies for my parents. My mother grew tired of me baking pies every weekend. It got worse once my grandmother passed away. Whenever I thought of her, I made a sweet potato pie. It was because of her that I fell in love with baking. The time I spent beside her baking was one of my most cherished memories.

As much as I complained about working for my mother. I truly enjoyed creating delectable masterpieces, even when I had to endure my mother’s insufferable attitude. Like today, she came storming into the bakery without uttering two words to me.

It wouldn’t have bothered me so much if she hadn’t spoken to everyone else. Normally, her attitude would cause me to have an attitude. Not today, though. I literally didn’t have the energy to be upset with her. Not when I could barely keep my eyes open, even after getting seven hours of sleep last night.

After brushing off my mother’s antics, I returned my attention to my sweet potato tarts. We were unveiling our fall menu next week, and I wanted the staff to taste test them before serving them. The consistency and texture were just right. Now, I just needed to make sure it tasted like my grandmother’s. I used a spoon to taste the sweet potato mixture.

More nutmeg.

I added a teaspoon to the mixture. A strong whiff of the spice blew past my nose, making my stomach turn and bile build in my throat. Before stepping back, I turned off the mixer. With my hand covering my mouth, I rushed to the bathroom. My mouth filled with saliva as I pushed the bathroom door opened. The nausea went away once I saw my mother at the sink washing her hands. I swallowed the lump in my throat and continued to the first stall.

Her eyes widened as she hurried to dry her hands.

“Mommy, what is going on with you?” I asked, stopping in my tracks while holding my stomach.

“I should be asking you the same thing.” Her eyes did a quick sweep over me. I dropped my hands from my stomach when I noticed her gazed lingering there. “You’ve been ‘tired’ a lot lately. I called you twice this week and you were sleeping in the middle of the day.”

“I can’t be tired? I work two jobs, one of which is a business I run.”

She held up her finger and continued. “Not to mention, you’ve been sneaking around here with Drew’s cousin and haven't said anything to me about it.”

“Sneaking around?”

“It’s been what? Six months, and I haven’t formally met him.
